Are human beings endangered species?
![]() War, terrorism, murder, natural disasters, accidents, drugs and disease have long been recognized as causes of death. Lately, I've been wondering about the effects of science, technology and financial concerns causing the elimination of the human race. History has given us lessons from the Bible, to the industrial revolution, to today where beliefs and "progress" have annihilated groups and individuals. In some cultures people were killed because of their faith, because they couldn't bear children or didn't produce a male offspring. Over the years, the financial need to increase production has eliminated more and more jobs as assembly lines have been replaced by machines. Economically it makes sense however it has displaced many who had jobs. Have you noticed the increase in "self check-out" counters in Walmart, Home Depot and other stores. Machines, computers and robots can do the work of many with much less expense and increased consistency. The ever-increasing cost of living, mounting Federal and State debt have taken a toll. No longer can demands be met to help the growing number of people who find themselves homeless, unemployed on welfare or unable to pay for needed medical care. The huge number of us born with-in the same 10 year period have created an enormous strain on our medical profession. We are the largest number of people in history over 60 years old. No way around it, after more than half a century, our bodies need help. The "personal touch" of face to face communication between people has been replaced by texting, e-mails and social media. A computer's artificial intelligence beat two extremely brilliant contestants on Jeopardy. Don't get me wrong, I am not against science and technology. If it wasn't for science and technology I wouldn't enjoy many of the devices I love. I wouldn't have a car to drive, light in the dark, a way to instantly be connected to family and friends despite the miles. I wouldn't be able to blog and share my ramblings. I wouldn't have robotic surgery and gone home the next day. I'm not saying "back in the good old days" because this renaissance has been evolving since the beginning of time. I feel blessed. I am just wondering, as I enjoy this last chapter of my life adventure, what will life be like for the grandchildren of my grandchildren? |
