Officially in the Northern Hemisphere, summer solstice begins on Jun 21 2010 at 7:28 AM EDT and in the UK, on June 21, 2010 at 11:28 UT
As a major celestial event, the Summer Solstice results in the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The Northern Hemisphere celebrates in June, but the people on the Southern half of the earth have their longest summer day in December.
I got these official facts from the "official fun fact site" online. Year round I tend to celebrate each day as though it was the summer solstice. I like the days to stay light as long as possible. I tend to be active longer during the day and my nights of sleep are short. Each day we have is certainly a gift. Sometimes they come in special packaging and the Summer Solstice is one such special day.
