Exciting news...
![]() Rays' Price chosen USA TODAY's top minor leaguer By Mel Antonen, USA TODAY Pitcher David Price, a left-hander from Vanderbilt who pitched at three levels in the Tampa Bay Rays' organization, is USA TODAY's Minor League Player of the Year. Price won the award in a vote by the staff of USA TODAY and Sports Weekly as well as online voting for fans. Price, 23, is a 6-6 lefty with a strong arm that has drawn comparisons to Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton and Andy Pettitte. Price mixes a fastball in the high 90s with a slider in the high 80s, but his Class AAA pitching coach, Xavier Hernandez, said that he needs to work on getting better with his changeup. "It's important for a young pitcher, and he's got the desire to learn it," Hernandez says. After his junior season with the Commodores, Tampa Bay made Price the No. 1 selection in the 2007 draft. An elbow strain in spring training delayed his minor-league debut until May 22. Then he dominated. Price went 11-0 with a 1.87 ERA in 15 starts at Class A Vero Beach (Fla.) and Class AA Montgomery (Ala.) Price was 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA for Class AAA Durham (N.C.). Thank you USA Today for the fantastic news. What with storms and a slumping economy and the various things that effect our everyday life it is nice to read about good things happening to good people. Congratulations to David Price. Go Rays! |
