(9) Hold On Tight

As people saw the rainbow colored balloon softly drifting down from the sky, a crowd began to assemble. Hope pulled in the rope and lassoed herself to Douglas. She balanced herself and took out her binoculars to keep watch for the signal. She knew Noah was a great kicker. He would send the football flying high when it was time. Grandma navigated the hot air balloon toward a field adjacent to the McDonald's Parking lot. Suddenly a gust of wind shook the balloon and sent it swirling. "Hold on!" Yelled Grandma. Noah and Jake held on tight. The basket tossed and turned in the air currents. "Are we going to tip and fall out?" Jake and Noah said at the same time. "Sit down in the basket," and saying that Grandma sat down too and hugged them close to her. "Don't worry we will be okay." High above them Hope and Douglas saw what was happening. "We have to save them," said Hope. "Stay calm," replied Douglas. "We will fly over them and keep watch. If it looks like they are about to fall we will swoop down and catch them. I promise. Now hold on tight in case I need to react suddenly." Hope tightened the rope and watched in silent fear as her brother, her cousin and her grandma were tossed around by the unstable air currents. The people below called 911 when they saw what was happening. Firetrucks, police cars and an ambulance were now following the balloon's course. A policeman called out his window with a bullhorn, "Hold on tight. We have an emergency crew here to help you." Grandma slowly stood up and waved a thumbs up to the officer. When she did she saw a most unfortunate site, a huge tower was just in front of them. She recognized it. It was the tower at Hemisfair Park. She had eaten dinner there years ago in the Tower of Americas Restaurant. The observation deck gave a fantastic panoramic view of San Antonio. She had enjoyed her visit there but now it looked like it was directly in their path and they might crash into it. She sat back down and drew Jake and Noah close to her. The Emergency Rescue Team feared the same thing and began evacuating the tower. Douglas and Hope watched vigilantly from above. Only minutes before the balloon had been floating peacefully, now it was spinning and falling out of control in the sky headed towards uncertain disaster. 0 comments |
